She's helped several paralyzed dogs walk again and has assisted numerous horses and dogs to return to the show ring. Chiropractic is the science, art and philosophy of correcting spinal misalignments to increase the range of motion, flexibility and overall health. Dr. Leah commented that "In my experience, the majority of the animals I work with enjoy getting adjusted. I notice that they relax when they sense you are there to help them and make them feel better."

CANADIAN CHIROPRACTOR VISITS DR. LEAH

Dr. Recnik is a chiropractor from Alberta, Canada. She was in town for the Masters Circle Seminar in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Leah was excited to have her in town and they both did lots of brainstorming!

RUSTY THE WONDERDOG!!!

As many of my patient's know, I have been talking a lot about the incredible little dog I started taking care of named Rusty. This dog (and his wonderful owners) amazed me and his story is one I love to brag about. Rusty was referred to me by Dr. Smith from Ark Animal Hospital in Chalfont, PA. I have just started to form an excellent relationship with this office and I am starting to get a stream of referrals from them.
When I got the phone call about Rusty I was very excited to take care of him. Rusty became my oldest "doggie chiropractic patient" at the age of 17 years old!!! When I met Rusty, you would have never known he was 17. It took 3 people, I call them his bodyguards, to bring the little Norwich Terrier to the office. You can see it in everyone's eyes, he is one loved dog.

To my surprise Rusty was in excellent physical shape. He has what I call, "old age syndrome", but he is in otherwise great shape. The owners main complaint was his legs were starting to give out and he has a hard time on smooth surfaces. This is very common in older dogs, even half Rusty's age. I chose to do very gentle treatments and focused mainly on using the Erchonia Cold Laser.

After 2 treatments Rusty has been much more mobile. He was doing so well he decided to jump off his crate while he was getting his daily pampering. I decided to make a house call yesturday to see him. I was excited to see he was doing fine and made a lier out of his owners!

Thank you to Rusty's wonderful owners and an incredible veterinarian for allowing me to take care of him. Thanks for the cake and lemonade too!!!

BUDDY IS DOING GREAT!!!

Buddy is a 13 year old lab mix who was referred to me from Ark Animal Hospital. His owner said he was having a difficult time getting around and had hip problems. Buddy's vet, Dr. Smith, thought a chiropractic adjustment would benefit him.

Buddy has had 4 visits over the last couple months and he's doing fantastic. His owner even said he jumped on their bed for the first time in years! I am very excited that he's getting such great results.

ROCK FOR REDS - HUGE SUCCESS!

Over $1000 was raised for the Doberman Rescue of PA at ROCK FOR REDS. The event was inspired from "Caine's Story", a love for animals, and a vision for the future.

Rock for Reds raised awareness for Alternative Care for Animals. Thank you Dawn Heckenberger and her family for putting together such a wonderful event.

MAKING CAINE ABLE

Dawn Heckenberger and her family had just about given up hope that their beloved Doberman pinscher would be with them much longer. Injured and aging, Caine was unable to walk and the time had come, they thought, to have him put down.

But the 9-year-old dog lived another year and a half after the Hatfield woman made a call to a chiropractor, Leah Garlan.

“I was very skeptical,” said Heckenberger, “but I listened to what she had to say.”

Garlan, who has a human chiropractic practice in Silverdale, convinced the family to have Caine come for a couple of visits to see if she could help the 120-pound dog, paralyzed in both back legs. She's also licensed with the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association.

“He started to respond after only two adjustments,” said Heckenberger. Within about eight weeks, Caine regained almost complete use of his hind legs.

For Heckenberger, whose heart, she explained, “lies with the animal world,” the recovery of her dog was more than a blessing for her family; it became an opportunity to raise awareness about chiropractic and homeopathic care for animals.

“I never knew about it, that there was alternative care for pets,” she said. “I want others to know.”

Heckenberger is sponsoring an event Saturday at the New Britain Baptist Church on Route 202 in New Britain to educate the public about animal chiropractic care.

Pet owners turn to chiropractic care, which involves adjustments, sometimes called manipulations, of the spine and joints to keep them in proper alignment, when they aren't getting the results they want through traditional veterinary medicine, said Garlan.

“With gentle adjustments by hand you can restore proper motion to the joints and that promotes healing,” Garlan said.

“The most important thing is knowing when to refer” an animal to a veterinary chiropractor, she said.

Dr. Drew Sporer, a Doylestown vet, said although he doesn't practice chiropractic care, he strongly supports it and recommends it for some of his patients.

“I absolutely believe there's a place for alternative care for pets,” he said.

Ten or 15 years ago, his opinion might have been different. “I was more skeptical then,” said Sporer, “but I've actually seen pets recover.”

Alternative medicine for animals has been around for some 20 years, but has become increasingly popular in the last several years.

Sporer said he's seen more practitioners popping up, offering acupuncture, homeopathic and chiropractic care in growing numbers over the past five years.

Dr. Alberto G. Gil, who has been practicing holistic medicine for 13 years from his Long Island, N.Y., office, believes chiropractic medicine can be a great benefit to animals.

Dogs with hip dysplasia, whose owners are often told will not walk again, can be returned to a healthy quality of life, Gil said.

Cats, horses and other animals can also be helped with chiropractic care, many veterinarians agree.

Fees for the services range from $40 a visit to $75.
